Te mahi māu mehemea he huapai te whakamātautau STI
What to do if you test positive
You can have a sexually transmissible infection (STI) without showing any symptoms so it may come as a surprise to learn that you have tested positive.
First 5 steps to take
1. Find out you've tested positive
If you have requested a test through Get Tested NZ and you test positive for an STI, we’ll be in touch with you directly (unless you've done an HIV self-test).
You'll get a phone call from one of our nurses who has reviewed your test results and can talk to you about next steps and treatment options. The phone call from Get Tested NZ will show up as a landline number starting with '07'.
For the HIV self-test, you get your results within 20 minutes. It's up to you to get in touch with us, or another healthcare provider, to tell us you've tested positive and arrange further testing.
2. Get your treatment
Many STIs are easily treated with a prescription of antibiotics. The earlier you get treatment, the better. Not getting treatment for an STI can have a serious impact on your health in the long term.
It’s safest not to have sex while you’re having treatment – and to wait until your partners or sexual contacts have also been tested (and treated if needed). If you do have sex before you finish your treatment, use condoms or oral dams.
3. Tell people
It's important to let people know that you've tested positive for an STI. This includes telling your partners or sexual contacts and your healthcare provider. Sometimes you might also like to tell your whānau and friends – but this is always your decision.
4. Get help and support
There are organisations around Aotearoa that can provide you with services like a free helpline, counselling, and specific advice for your situation.
5. Stay safe
There are steps you can take to have safer sex and protect yourself from getting re-infected or getting other STIs.
